Stop your umbrella flipping and toppling
A gust of wind can flip an umbrella inside out or topple it over — damaging it and risking injury. Here's how to keep yours stable and safe.
Use a heavy, suitable base
The base is your first line of defence. Use a base heavy enough for your umbrella's size — bigger umbrellas need heavier bases. A too-light base is the most common cause of toppling.
Secure it properly
- For table umbrellas, make sure the pole is firmly held by both the table and a base below.
- For cantilevers, use the recommended heavy base or anchor it down.
- Consider fixing or weighting the base for extra security in windy spots.
Choose a vented canopy
A vented canopy (with a gap at the top) lets wind pass through instead of pushing against the whole umbrella — greatly reducing the chance of it flipping. A great feature for windy areas.
Close it in strong wind
The simplest, most important habit: close and secure your umbrella whenever strong winds or a storm are coming. No umbrella is built for a gale — don't risk it.
Position it wisely
Where possible, place the umbrella in a more sheltered spot (near a wall or windbreak) rather than fully exposed to gusts.
Pick a sturdy, wind-resistant frame
Quality matters. A strong frame with sturdy ribs resists bending and flipping far better than a flimsy one. It's worth investing in a well-built umbrella.
Don't leave it up unattended in bad weather
If you're heading out or going to bed and wind is forecast, close it. Especially important during India's pre-monsoon squalls and storms.
Tie down the canopy when closed
When closed, use the tie or strap to keep the fabric wrapped, so wind can't catch and damage it.
